The Science Edit

Premium picks, examined

Formulations with meaningful research and ingredient integrity behind the price.

SkinCeuticals
Retinol 0.3 Refining Night Cream
Pure 0.3% retinol stabilised in a slow-release vehicle. The widely-cited benchmark for a starter prescription-adjacent retinol.
~$80USD
Sunday Riley
A+ High-Dose Retinoid Serum
A blend of retinoid esters and encapsulated retinol. Developed for experienced users; not a first retinoid.
~$85USD
Medik8
Crystal Retinal 6
Retinaldehyde, one step closer to tretinoin on the conversion pathway. Marketed for faster visible results with comparable tolerability.
~$95USD

Each selection reviewed against published formulation data and ingredient literature. None have been personally tested for the purposes of this guide.

The Smart Find

Accessible picks, equally weighed

The same actives, often the same delivery science, at a fraction of the retail price.

CeraVe
Anti Aging Retinol Serum
Encapsulated retinol with ceramides and niacinamide. Formulated specifically to minimise the barrier disruption retinoids are known for.
~$20USD
The Ordinary
Retinol 0.5% in Squalane
A straightforward, single-active formulation. Available in 0.2%, 0.5% and 1% so tolerance can be built up deliberately.
~$10USD
RoC
Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum
A long-established drugstore retinol with a publicly available history of formulation studies. Sold in Canada and internationally.
~$22USD

Price-to-active ratio noted in every comparison. Products selected because the formulation holds up, not because they are cheap.

What we took away

A $20 retinol can deliver the same molecule, at the same strength, as a $180 one. The premium may purchase elegance, texture, and a gentler introduction, but it does not purchase a better active. Daily SPF remains the single highest-return product in any routine.

How we research

Three labels. Used honestly.

Researched

Gathered from credible sources, product documentation, and available evidence.

Ingredient literature, peer-reviewed studies where they exist, manufacturer formulation data, and independent publications. Where evidence is limited, we say so.

Tested

Personally used and evaluated, only where we actually have.

A product is only ever labelled Tested when it has genuinely been used over time. We do not describe products as personally tested based on a single trial, a sample, or someone else's experience.

Compared

Assessed against the real alternatives, on ingredients and price together.

Where a product has a cheaper or more expensive counterpart that performs similarly on paper, we show them side by side. The point is not to crown winners, but to explain what the price difference is actually buying.

Our standing rule

Glow, Classically exists to separate meaningful information from marketing claims. If a product promises what it cannot deliver, we say so. If the evidence is thin, we say so. If an inexpensive product does the same job as an expensive one, we say that too.

Editorial & Guides

What women forty and beyond are actually asking.

Ingredient Explainer

Retinol or retinal? The one letter that matters.

The two look almost identical on a label but behave differently on the skin. A plain-language explanation of which one earns its price.

About

Women deserve better information when they spend money on beauty.

The beauty industry is enormous, well-funded, and skilled at persuasion. The information women use to navigate it is largely written by the people selling to them, by influencers paid to promote, or in language so technical that it isn't really information at all.

Glow, Classically was built to sit in the gap. It is independent, research-led, and written in the voice of a knowledgeable friend rather than a laboratory or a lifestyle brand. The product is the research. The reputation is what the brand earns by giving clear, useful answers over time.

The platform is editorially independent. Affiliate commissions do not influence recommendations. When a product does not earn a place, it does not get one.

Glow, Classically may earn a small commission when readers purchase a product through a link in one of our guides. The price you pay does not change. Our editorial choices are not determined by which brands pay commission. A product is included because the research supports it, not the other way around.
